The Founders Defend Their Title!
At the end of June, Rob, Bill and Jeff once again conquered the Steelman Three-Mile Relay at Lake Nockamixon in Eastern Pennsylvania. Of course, we’re probably lucky that some of our other iSwim4 teammates weren’t there, because I think that any team with Dan K and Bob Pugh would’ve taken us down, so we’ll hope they continue to ignore this race.
More important than winning this somewhat obscure event is the inherent story we share relating to one our foundations’ goals: “Shining a Light on What’s Possible in Recovery.” When I refer to “what’s possible…” it’s not the ‘winning’ that I’m referring to - it’s the fact that we have created this bond between ourselves and that we are enjoying life to the fullest. We’re 3 older guys with the common interest of swimming who have connected with each other through our involvement in the recovery community. So, what we’re shining a light on is that it’s possible to find “our people” within the recovery community. People with common interests, people who are fun-loving, people who support and encourage each other and work as a team.
People we truly connect with.
I’ve heard so many stories of people who have isolated themselves in their active addiction/alcoholism - people who have burned bridges and destroyed most of their relationships. And similarly, I hear it stated time and again that when people initially got sober, they though life would be boring. Inevitably, those who stick around and develop relationships with others in the community begin to enjoy life more. They find others with common interests - or they get involved in activities which are new to them, expanding their horizons - and enjoying life.
Living life connected. Just like us.
