Scott R - Swimming is an important part of my Recovery

Scott R preparing for a Tri

My name is Scott. I started competitive swimming at a young age and competed at meets year-round up until 7th grade where I switched my focus to basketball. In high school I was never really interested in drinking. I was typically in the gym trying to improve my game as my goal was to play in college. But my senior year everything changed when I tore my meniscus and was forced to miss my entire senior season. For the first time in my life, I felt lost and depressed. I went off to college, joined a fraternity, and started drinking and doing drugs. My disease took me to some dark places and my health was negatively affected as well. For the next 10 years I never exercised, ate poorly, and was consuming large amounts of alcohol on the weekends. I realized my health was declining so I started swimming again and biking/running. It felt good to be active again and I was hoping the exercise would help me with managing my drinking but quickly realized that was not working and that I needed to get sober. Luckily, I got to the point of surrendering to this disease and found a solution in alcoholics anonymous. Swimming has continued to be a big part of my life as I compete in long distance triathlon events. Swimming and staying active is a very important part of my recovery and overall health and I hope to inspire others to explore the amazing world of swimming!
